Little Mermaid Statue

The Little Mermaid (Danish: Den lille havfrue) is a bronze statue depicting a mermaid, which is displayed on a rock at waterside at Langelinie promenade in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The statue was created by Edvard Eriksen (1876 to 1959), a Danish-Icelandic sculptor. The statue was commissioned by Carl Jacobsen, son of the founder of Carlsberg, in 1909, and was unveiled on August 23rd 1913. The statue is 4.1 feet (1.25 meters) tall, and weights 385 pounds (175 kilograms).

The statue was inspired by the fairy tale of the Little Mermaid written by Hans Christian Andersen. This theme was chosen by Carl Jacobsen, who had become fascinated by a ballet about the fairy tale in Copenhagen's Royal Theatre. Jacobsen had asked the ballerina Ellen Price to be the model for the statue - however, as she would not agree to model in the nude, only the statue's face is based on Ellen Price - the sculptor, Edvard Eriksen, used his wife, Eline Eriksen, as the model for the statue's body.
